“I don’t write these words lightly and this day carries mixed emotions for me.”

That’s Landon Donovan, minutes ago, in a Facebook post to his fans. After a career that can only be called transformative, the player who personified soccer in the United States is retiring.

Taylor Twellman broke the news on Twitter this morning. His report capped off a frantic 24 hours of contradictory predictions. We had a source confirming Sacha Kljestan would sign with LA. Other guesses included LA somehow nabbing Jermaine Jones, or Omar Gonzalez moving to Europe. Now it looks like nobody had the real scoop.

The Galaxy are holding a press conference for 2 PM, and we’ll be there to see how a legendary player says goodbye.
