Carson, CA – LA Galaxy fans have been waiting for a breakout performance from one of their Designated Players, Giovani Dos Santos, and they finally got it last Friday night. Gio’s two goals and an assist have earned him MLS Player of the Week honors for Week 7 of this season.
Having missed a significant number of games in his early MLS career, Dos Santos has now tallied 5 goals and 7 assists in 13 appearances. But Friday was certainly his best so far—Gio’s first goal came just four minutes after the Galaxy conceded in the opening minute of play. Dos Santos converted after a long ball, knocked down by Sebastian Lletget, which fell to his feet in front of the stranded Houston Dynamo goalkeeper Joe Willis.
A second-half flicked header earned Giovani Dos Santos an assist, and it was his first-half cross that Dynamo goalkeeper Joe Willis spilled to Baggio Husidic for LA’s second goal.
But the Mexican international’s finest moment came in the 31st minute. Steven Gerard hit an absolute peach of a switched ball, which Gio took down masterfully with his left foot and smacked home with his weaker right foot.
Was this a taste of the best that is yet to come from both Stevie G and Dos Santos? Galaxy fans are sure hoping so, and following their first road-win of the year in Houston, LA will be looking to continue this fine form on Saturday at home against a red-hot Real Salt Lake side.
