LA Galaxy II Return to Winning Ways, Defeat Tulsa Roughnecks 2-0

The LA Galaxy II got a much needed win over the Tulsa Roughnecks on Friday night. A goal was scored in each half, through Adonis Amaya and Alejandro Covarrubias. This was Los Dos’ first win in three previous matches, and with this win, they jump all the way up to the second spot for the time being.

From the opening whistle, Los Dos came out attacking. Jose Villarreal weaved his way past a couple of Tulsa defenders. The attack was nice, but the end product was not. Villarreal’s shot attempt rolled straight into the goalkeepers’ arms.

The Roughnecks like to counter and in the fifth minute, they went to work. Gustavo Villalobos took a couple of nice touches to get inside the area. But Bennett Sneddon came off his line and made a good save.

Los Dos’ early pressure paid off right away. A long ball over the top was not cleared correctly by the Roughneck defense. Gary Cennerazzo did not put enough emphasis on his header back to his goalkeeper. As a result, Adonis Amaya made them pay by reading the play and putting the ball into the back of the net.

Jose Villarreal was one of the main outlets in the attack for the young G’s. From 25 yards out, in the 27th minute, he unleashed a left-footed shot that got saved well. Three minutes later, LA Galaxy II showed some flare in their attack. They passed the ball around the ball at the top of the box, in a triangle, before sending it out wide. Jo. Villarreal sent a cross back the other way, but Raul Mendiola’s effort got sent over the crossbar.

Sennedon was quite impressive in the opening 45 minutes. On the edge of halftime, he dove full stretch to keep out a sensational free kick. That save kept Los Dos’ one goal advantage heading into the break.

It did not take long for drama to ensue in the second half. Two minutes in, Jose Villarreal made a darting run near the right corner of the box. David Abidor brought down his opposite number and the ref pointed to the spot straight away. 24-year-old Alejandro Covarrubias stepped up from 12 yards away. He dispatched his shot past the goalkeeper with ease, sending him the wrong way.

The young G’s return to action this Saturday night as they welcome in the Orange County Blues.
