The LA Galaxy terminated the contract of Guillermo Barros Schelotto and his staff, on Thursday afternoon after an embarrassing loss to Portland on Wednesday night.
CARSON, Calif. — The LA Galaxy have parted ways with Head Coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto. The announcement on Thursday afternoon, coming less than 24 hours after Schelotto held a one-question press conference after losing 5-2 to the Portland Timbers in Portland on Wednesday night.
“The LA Galaxy announced today that the club had relieved Guillermo Barros Schelotto of his head coaching duties, effective immediately,” the press release stated. “Dominic Kinnear will serve as the LA Galaxy interim head coach for the remainder of the 2020 season.”
Additionally, assistant coaches Gustavo Barros Schelotto, Ariel Pereyra, Juan José Romero, and performance coach Javier Valdecantos have been relieved of their coaching duties.
“Based on results, we have decided to go in a different direction,” said LA Galaxy General Manager Dennis te Kloese. “The LA Galaxy is a club that is built on winning on the field and being representative of the championship mentality and pedigree that you expect in Los Angeles.”
Schelotto, who was hired for the job on January 2, 2019, and replaced interim manager Dominic Kinnear after Sigi Schmidt’s firing, was a combined 21-26-6 during his almost two seasons in charge.
Kinnear has, once again, been named the interim manager for the club.
“As a club, we have a collective responsibility, and we all must share the blame for the club’s current standing,” te Kloese said. “I take responsibility for the poor results and believe that we can find the right way forward for this team and our club.”
The LA Galaxy are 5-11-3 in 2020 and are on the precipice of missing the playoffs for the third time in the last four years.
