In the earliest start in MLS history, the Galaxy will host New York City FC on February 27 at Dignity Health Sports Park
The LA Galaxy have the date, time, and opponent for when they start the 2022 season and it’s going to be a busy first seven days.
The Galaxy, who missed the playoffs in 2021, will open their season on Sunday, February 27 against New City FC at Dignity Health Sports Park. The game will kick off at 2 PM PT and more than likely be featured on a national tv broadcast although those specifics have not been released.
Previously announced, the Galaxy will spend the second weekend of the season — and just six days later — playing visitors to Charlotte FC’s first home game as an expansion club. That game will take place on March 5, at Bank of America Stadium at 5 PM PT (that could also be a nationally televised game).
The league announced all home openers for all 28 clubs for the 2022 season with expectations that the full league schedule could be announced before the end of 2021.
And during the 2022 season, Nashville SC will move to the Western Conference balancing out the league. That will leave 14 teams in each conference and will ensure that each team plays their in-conference opponents twice (home and away) and then eight non-conference opponents (four games at home and four games away). That makes NYC and Charlotte two of the eight non-conference opponents.
The match with NYCFC will be just the 6th meeting all-time between the two clubs, and owing mostly to the Covid-19 pandemic, it will be their first meeting since a 2-0 win by NYC in Los Angeles on May 11, 2019.
The Galaxy are 1-4-0 against NYC with the singular victory coming in front of a sold-out “Stub Hub Center” crowd in New York’s first year in the league (5-1 win on August 23, 2015).
New York, currently, ousted Atlanta United in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs and will be placed in the Conference Semi-Finals against the best team in 2021, the New England Revolution.
There are just 97 days until the Galaxy are scheduled to play NYCFC and teams are expected to show up to preseason training camp in the middle of January.
