LA Galaxy build a home for a statue park that will eventually hold other Galaxy Legends
CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy will have more than just a soccer team and a world-class stadium to attract crowds in the coming years. The club announced on Monday, that Dignity Health Sports Park will be home to Legends Plaza — a statue park honoring LA Galaxy legends of the past.
The first statue to be unveiled, announced earlier this month, will be that of Galaxy legend David Beckham. Along with an induction into the LA Galaxy Ring of Honor), Beckham’s statue will be the first in a series of statues to grace a remodeled entrance to the stadium. Something similar to AEG’s other stadium in Los Angeles — Staples Center – and what they have done with statues for the Lakers.
“The Legends Plaza at Dignity Health Sports Park continues our commitment to be the finest soccer-specific stadium in Major League Soccer,” said LA Galaxy President Chris Klein. “Legends Plaza is a way for our club to honor the history of our club and the many great players that have worn the LA Galaxy jersey. For years to come, Legends Plaza will be an ideal place for fans to gather before and after matches at Dignity Health Sports Park.”
The team will officially open the plaza in a pre-game ceremony on March 2 (2:30 p.m.) ahead of the Galaxy’s season opener against the Chicago Fire later that night (5:00 p.m., FS1)
It’s a project that has struggled to finish while Southern California has endured some unusually wet weather in the last few months. However, it’s also a project that should squeak in under the deadline and be 100-percent done by Saturday’s match.
There was some fan controversy surrounding the selection of Beckham to be the first legend to be honored with a statue. With legends such as Cobi Jones, Mauricio Cienfuegos, Carlos Ruiz, Landon Donovan, and Robbie Kean all having their names put forward.
So while this announcement won’t completely quiet the masses of fans who think other Galaxy legends should’ve come first, the addition of other Legends will eventually make the argument moot.
