COG STUDIOS, Calif. — LA finished a frantic deadline period by bringing Lucas Calegari back to the Galaxy and adding veteran MLS midfielder Pablo Ruiz, two moves that add experience, depth and some fascinating new lineup possibilities for the final 11 games of the season.
Calegari’s return might be the most intriguing move. The former Galaxy Defender of the Year is healthy, experienced in the system and eager to return to Los Angeles. But his arrival also creates legitimate competition with Harbor Miller, whose emergence has been one of the more encouraging developments of the season. Could the Galaxy find ways to use both?
Then there’s Ruiz. The experienced MLS midfielder gives LA another option in the middle and could help reshape how Sergi Roberto, Lucas Sanabria, Marco Reus and Justin Haak are used down the stretch. Roberto already offered a glimpse against San Diego of the progressive passing and creativity he can bring from deeper positions.
One departure, however, deserves a closer look. Ruben Ramos Jr. has been loaned to Sporting Kansas City through the 2027 sprint season in exchange for $75,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money, with a purchase option included. After Ramos showed signs of breaking through, is regular playing time elsewhere exactly what he needs — or should the Galaxy have found those minutes at home?
Now comes the part that matters.
The Galaxy have 11 games and 33 available points remaining. They’re still within striking distance of the playoff line, but the required pace from here is daunting. And Saturday’s home match against fourth-place New England Revolution provides an immediate test of whether this remodeled roster can turn potential into points.
There are reasons for optimism. Chucky Lozano is beginning to show his difference-making ability, João Klauss appears close to returning, Roberto should be ready for a larger role, and the Galaxy suddenly have more legitimate lineup options than they’ve had for much of the season.
