COG STUDIOS, Calif. — The LA Galaxy let two critical points slip away against the Seattle Sounders, turning a late 1-0 lead into a frustrating 1-1 draw at Dignity Health Sports Park. Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter break down a match the Galaxy needed to win, from missed opportunities in front of goal to the defensive breakdown that allowed Seattle toequalize in the closing minutes. LA created chances but couldn’t find the second goal, continuing a season-long problem of failing to turn leads into victories.
Now the MLS Cup Playoff race gets even more difficult. The Galaxy remain alive in a crowded Western Conference, but the Seattle draw puts even more pressure on their remaining eight games. LA hasn’t won consecutive matches all season, yet the teams surrounding them are struggling too, leaving an unlikely opening if the Galaxy can finally find some consistency. The problem? After failing to capitalize at home, they now need to start finding points on the road — beginning with Minnesota United.
The biggest concern, however, may be Sergi Roberto’s shoulder injury. Roberto appeared at the Galaxy’s season-ticket event with his arm in a sling, and his potential absence could remove one of the most important pieces of LA’s rebuilt midfield. Marco Reus also left the Seattle match with a groin concern, while Joseph Paintsil continues to work through a thigh issue. For a Galaxy team whose improved depth was supposed to become an advantage down the stretch, another wave of injuries could dramatically change the playoff equation.

Lucas Calegari’s return provides a boost, and LA suddenly has more options off the bench, but draws aren’t going to be enough forever. Minnesota sits right in the same congested portion of the Western Conference table, making Saturday another opportunity to take three points while denying them to a direct competitor. The Galaxy survived Seattle, but they lost another precious week — and the clock on their 2026 season is getting louder.
