COG STUDIOS, Calif. — The LA Galaxy’s playoff hopes are hanging in the balance after a devastating 6-2 loss to St. Louis CITY SC. With just five games remaining in the 2026 MLS regular season, can Greg Vanney’s team recover in time for two critical home matches?
On this episode of Corner of the Galaxy, Josh Guesman and Damian Calhoun break down one of LA’s most disappointing performances of the season, the defensive mistakes that led to six goals conceded, and the coaching decisions that could determine whether the Galaxy reach the MLS Cup Playoffs.
Greg Vanney admits he prioritized the upcoming home games against Portland and San Diego. But was sacrificing the opportunity to compete in St. Louis the right decision? Josh and Damian examine Vanney’s postgame comments, Justin Haak’s difficult night, and the defensive struggles that continue to haunt the Galaxy despite significant offseason investments.
Meanwhile, João Klauss delivers a passionate message following the defeat, demanding accountability and a response against Portland. But with Chucky Lozano sidelined, Kyogo Furuhashi dealing with a potential hamstring injury, and Marco Reus and Joseph Paintsil requiring careful management, LA’s depth is being tested at the worst possible moment.
The guys also dive into the Western Conference playoff standings, the Galaxy’s troubling defensive statistics, and why Wednesday’s matchup with the Portland Timbers could be the most important game of the season.
With Portland winless in its last five matches, is this LA’s opportunity to bounce back? Josh and Damian preview the tactical matchup, debate potential lineup changes, and deliver their score predictions.
Plus, they examine Greg Vanney’s future with the Galaxy, his contract through 2028, and whether the organization shares the growing frustration among supporters.
Can the Galaxy turn a humiliating defeat into a season-saving response? Or will this be the week their playoff hopes unravel?
