The LA Galaxy now have 11 midfielders on the books – after the official signing of Servando Carrasco by the club – and they can still add 10 more players before the 2018 season kicks off.
Carrasco – a defensive midfielder – joins the club after a furious few days that have seen multiple signings and many rumors pop up surrounding the team.
A veteran of MLS, Carrasco enters his 10th season in the league and will be joining his fifth team in that time (Seattle Sounders, Houston Dynamo, Sporting KC, and Orlando City). Overall he’s made more than 125 appearances and has racked up over 7,200 minutes with two goals and five assists.
Servando has extensive MLS experience and brings depth to our squad,” said LA Galaxy Head Coach Sigi Schmid via a press release. “We’re excited to welcome Servando to the Galaxy.”
The 29-year old midfielder hails from San Diego, CA and was originally drafted by the Sounders in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft after a successful collegiate career at the University of California-Berkley. He received recognition as a first-team All-Pac 10 Honoree and Third Team All-American.
Carrasco arrives in Los Angeles after his rights were acquired with the first pick of Stage 2 of the 2017 MLS Re-Entry Draft on December 21.
He’s expected to fill a backup role to recent signing Perry Kitchen. Both Kitchen and Carrasco will be the only two dedicated defensive midfielders on the squad (unless additional signings to that position are made). With other central midfielders Baggio Husidic, Jonathan dos Santos, João Pedro, Sebastian Lletget, and even Giovani dos Santos all more attacking or box-to-box options than purely defensive stoppers.
Also of note, Carrasco is married to US Women’s National Team star, Alex Morgan. The two were married in December of 2014 and, before signing with the Galaxy, both were playing and living in Orlando.
Per league and team rules, terms of the deal were not released.
The Galaxy will open preseason training on January 22nd before opening the 2018 season on Sunday, March 4 against the Portland Timbers at StubHub Center.
