Podcast: Galaxy have a positive preseason performance from many, but injuries and absences are worrying

LA Galaxy got a victory over the visiting New England Revolution, but the big takeaway is that the young players are going to be relied on early in the season.

COG STUDIOS, Calif. — We finally saw the 2021 LA Galaxy play! Even if the team missed a whole handful of players, the Galaxy competed and scored on a preseason New England Revolution. So let’s start talking about it. Like right now!

Hosts Josh Guesman (LA Galaxy Beat Reporter) and Kevin Baxter (LA Times Soccer Writer) want to get you through all the latest Galaxy news. That includes talking about the first public preseason game on Saturday night, US Open Cup talk, players away on international duty, and Sergio Aguerro rumors that have a Galaxy fan base breathing heavy. It’s a fun show!

The guys will start with their look at the Galaxy’s 1-0 win over Bruce Arena’s Revolution and what may have surprised them. There’s also focus on the younger kids and the impression they’re making on the team and Greg Vanney and why some of them will be counted on to start the season. Are you ready to see Cameron Dunbar have a breakout season? What about Adam Saldaña or the goalscorer Johnny Perez? It’s exciting to think those three kids — and maybe some others — might be the future of the Galaxy, and you get to see it start.

Josh and Kevin will also gush about Jonathan Bond and talk about why Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez looks different and is playing differently.

But the bottom line is that with less than five perceived starters on the field, the Galaxy need to start solidifying positions, get players into camp, guys healthy, and some time together.

Because if there’s a slow start, the Galaxy can kiss the open cup goodbye, and they’ll be missing an opportunity to play together before Nations League, Gold Cup, and World Cup Qualifying start depleting the lineup again.

The guys will tell you what the US Open Cup has decided in terms of qualification guidelines and why someone may be drawing straws on May 3rd. Plus, is the Open Cup even worth playing this year? Yes. But should the Galaxy strive for it? Maybe they should just focus on the regular season?

Finally, would Sergio Aguerro be a good fit for the Galaxy, and will the club go after him? We’ll let you listen to find out!

Welcome back to another busy week of Galaxy news, games, and preseason information! We’re glad you decided to join us.
